Homework antics

Ryan looks positively angelic as he does his homework... That is until he sees the camera!
James isn't any better this time. Jeez! Some people's children...

Snow doggies

There was snow on the ground when we woke up this morning, and it's been accumulating steadily all day. The dogs were not terribly excited about going outside to use the bathroom. Unfortunately for them, I was even less excited about having them poop in the house. I am bigger so out they went.

Maggie was tentative at first...
but then she decided snow is FUN!
She tried to get Abbie to run around and play with her.
Come on, Abbie!
No takers.
Eventually she had to give up. When did Abbie get to be so crabby?
Poor Maggie. Maybe the kids will play outside with her when they get home from school.

RMNP Part Four--The Rock Shop

A funny thing happened as we drove out of Rocky Mountain National Park. Without warning, the kids started chanting "Rock Shop! Rock Shop!" Apparently Seth and the kids had visited the Rock Shop a month earlier and both Ryan and James were eager to go back. Seth mentioned that the Rock Shop was right next to a nice little coffee shop and that was enough to persuade me. As soon as we saw the sign, we made a sharp right into the parking lot. Seth and I went directly to the coffee shop, ordered our drinks and sat outside to drink them.
The coffee shop sits next to a wide spot in the river and there were lots of ducks to watch.
Of course, the kids had no interest in sitting still and watching waterfowl. They took off for the Rock Shop at the first possible moment.
Eventually we decided to catch up with them. Both kids were outside checking out the rocks.
The Rock Shop has a lot...
of rocks!
All shapes, sizes and colors!
Estes Park is full of little touristy shops filled with old timey Western souvenir crap.
The Rock Shop isn't completely immune to that kind of thing...
but mostly it's all about rocks.
If you ever need a rock of any sort, I would highly recommend the Rock Shop in Estes Park!

RMNP Part Three--More Pictures

The elk were definitely the highlight of our recent visit to Rocky Mountain National Park, but we also enjoyed some of the Park's other attractions before we headed home. We visited the riding stable even though it was closed for the season. Who wants to go on the Continental Divide ride with me next spring?
Ryan and James checking out the (locked) housing above the stables. Wouldn't it be great to live in the mountains and ride horses every day? Oh wait--I've done that and it was great!
Aspen trees on the mountainside. We were a couple weeks too early for prime aspen viewing.
More scenery.
Still more!
Ryan enjoying a snack on a bench near a creek.
Seth and James watching a fish in that same little creek.
A picture of the fish.

RMNP Part Two--Elk

It's not hard to find elk at Rocky Mountain National Park in September. All you have to do is drive around and look for a cluster of parked cars. Where there are cars, there are elk! We didn't have to drive very long after lunch before we found this herd napping under the trees. The big bull was off by himself, also napping.
Eventually he got up and walked around a little.
Are you my Daddy?
My camera didn't like the light under the trees and these elk weren't very interesting so I took pictures of the photographers instead.
I bet this kid got a good picture!
There were a few people without cameras.
This crazy kid was more interested in the sticks and rocks than the elk.
Eventually we moved on and found a second, more interesting group of elk.
This herd had managed to get split between two sides of one very vehicle crowded road.
The bull was very unhappy about this and kept bugling to the cows on the other side.
The herd kept going up to the road and thinking about crossing...
but then they'd chicken out at the last minute.
Finally, they made a break for it!
Elk power!
Safely on the other side.
Disappearing into a big field.
The bull kept on bugling even as he trotted off.
My three elk watchers with the herd in the distance.
